Go approximately thirteen miles north of Flagstaff (Highway 89), turn right at the Sunset Crater-Wupatki Loop Road and go two miles to the Visitor Center. WHEN TO VISIT Open year round. Peak visitor month is July. Climate: January, 24 to 52 degrees F; July, 80 to 108 degrees F. Average annual precipitation, 8 - 16 inches. POINTS OF INTEREST This volcanic cinder cone with summit crater was formed just before 1100 A.D. Its upper part is colored as if by a sunset. ACTIVITIES Visitor Center; NPS guided tours; self-guiding tours; picnic area; campground; group campsite; hiking. GENERAL INFORMATION Food, supplies, overnight accommodations, and hospital are available in Flagstaff. Sunset Crater is southeast of the Grand Canyon. A scenic 36-mile loop drive includes Wupatki National Monument. Nearby craters may be climbed, but Sunset Crater is closed to hiking.
